Super-light ash blonde is the hair color of the season. And while lightening up for summer isn't groundbreaking, this particular shade is about more than just beachy highlights. It's an intentional statement, less buttery and gleaming and more raw and rebellious. “The contentious climate of the past year has inspired women to lighten up and be more adventurous with their hair,” says celeb colorist Stephanie Brown, who has tended to Kate McKinnon’s tresses. Think Zoë Kravitz, Katy Perry, Scarlett Johansson and Olivia Wilde. Want to join the bevy of boss blondes? Even those with naturally dark hair can achieve the look, by following Stephanie's tips below.

  • Bring your colorist a photo of a celeb whose hair you admire.
  • Ask them to use a protective additive like Olaplex. This will allow darker hair to lift several shades while maintaining its integrity, aka not break.
  • Once you’ve scored your shade, maintain it with color- depositing products and deep condition once a week. “Purple or blue pigments make blondes paler and remove unwanted warmth,” explains Stephanie.

After you’ve tweaked your product regimen, relax. The style looks edgy contrasted with a dark root, so you don’t have to hurry back for touch-ups. Even better? You can skip blowouts, because rocking your natural texture suits the shade’s sexy, devil-may-care vibe.
