Just because she’s a famous movie star now doesn’t mean Olivia Wilde wasn’t an average American teenager.

“Ours was a very conservative prom,” she says in NYC today during the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of her Hurricane Sandy documentary, The Rider and The Storm, which she executive produced. “I went to boarding school. I think it was on a boat, so that no one could jump—laughs—so that no one could leave.”

She realizes not everyone has fond memories of the annual rite of passage.

“I was recently in Kansas City, and I met a kid who wasn’t allowed to go to his prom because he’s gay,” she says. “He wasn’t allowed to bring his boyfriend. It sickened me. When I think of prom now, I think of him.  I think that’s ridiculous. Hopefully prom, for everyone this year, is about love.”
