Orange Is the New Black is one of the hottest new TV shows in recent memory, which is why OKMagazine.com is so excited to have star Jackie Cruz as our special correspondent from New York Fashion Week! She’s exclusively sharing her diary with OKMagazine.com, so stay tuned for every show, party, and outfit!
Day 5 of New York Fashion Week was totally hectic for Jackie Cruz. “NYFW has been days full of my most memorable fashion style ever. But this Sunday was the most memorable one when it came to fashion,” she says. It kicked off very unluckily. “Let’s not ignore the fact that my outfit had a malfunction before heading to the Tracy Reese event, where I had to turn back home and change. Who knew that was going to happen, but I was so excited I didn’t let anything ruin my day.”
After that mini-disaster, Jackie hit up the Custo Barcelona show with some pals. “My stylist Luiza, boyfriend Francisco and I headed to the Custo Barcelona, a show I have been waiting to see,” she says. “Custo is a Latin designer that brings out our culture and style through his designs. At his show, I was able to meet and catch up with Michelle Herrera Mulligan, the editor-in-chief of Cosmo Latina and we chatted it up all the way to our seats. She was so sweet and had a great insight on Latin fashion.”
“When they seated us, I was happy to meet Joe Jonas and Gregory DelliCarpin, the fashion editor of Billboard Magazine. They were so excited to meet me as well. Didn’t think they would know who I am, but they did,” says Jackie. Check out a pic of her in the front row, above. “Once the show started I was blown away with all of Custo’s retro colors and bold textures.”
For the show, Jackie had fun with her own outfit. “I was excited to match his vision, as I wore a trucker hat from the 70’s with Cher-inspired make up by my make up artist Alyne Halvajian,” she says. “It was great to see that there was color added into winter with Custo’s vibrant red fur coat.”
It turns out the real fun goes on behind the scenes. “When the show finished, we all headed back stage where I met fashion icons and influencers who I follow. I was in all ‘wow’ to meet celebrity stylist, June Ambrose and her daughter, who recognized me as ‘Flaca,'” says Jackie. “I couldn’t believe she was such a big fan and loves my character on Orange. While talking to her, I met Justin Davis of Boardwalk Empire, who was a pleasure to meet as we both are new to this. I also had the amazing honor to meet Miss J.”
“After Custo, we headed to the Empire Hotel for some lunch but for a good cause. I had lunch at the first New Roots Pop-up during NYFW. The pop-up was organized by the International Rescue Committee who prepared grab-and-go lunches featuring fresh produce that represent 15 of their new root gardens,” says Jackie. Yum! “They partnered up with the amazing chef David Burke for these lunches. It was a pleasure meeting all of them. The IRC’s New Roots program connects refugees with the land so that they can grow their own fresh produce, connect with their communities and in some cases, and sell their produce at local farmers’ markets. I was happy to take time out to be part of such a great cause.”
The weather continues not to agree with Jackie or any of the other fashionistas at NYFW. “The snow didn’t stop us as we headed to Pyer Moss’ fashion presentation. Pyer is known for many of the pieces that Rihanna wears even though he designs for men,” says Jackie. “I love his pieces and couldn’t wait to meet him.” Turns out he’s a big fan of her show, too! “When we arrived the first thing I noticed was Pyer wearing Orange sneakers. I had to point them out to him and his response was ‘I’m a fan of Orange Is the New Black.’ That definitely made my day and it was a perfect way to end it.”
