Not everyone agrees. Melissa Etheridge, who battled breast cancer eight years ago, has the same type of genetic mutation as Angelina—but she says there are other options besides major surgery. "I wouldn’t call it the brave choice," says the 52-year-old singer. "I actually think it’s the most fearful choice you can make when confronting anything with cancer."
Melissa insists lifestyle is the key to keeping cancer away for those with the BRCA-1 mutation. "It’s the stress that will turn that gene on or not," she says.
When Brad found out Melissa's viewpoint, he seemed surprised. "Oh, I didn’t know, I haven’t seen her," he said.
So how will Brad, 49, approach his pal's disapproval of 38-year-old Angelina's decision to go under the knife? "Melissa is an old friend of mine, so I’ll have to give her a call," the actor diplomatically answered.
