As New York City grinds to a halt with the wrath of Hurricane Sandy, so has much of the entertainment industry.

With public transport at zero and everyone in their right mind staying indoors for their own safety, major shows have also decided to pull the plug on taping.

"Due to stupid Hurricane Sandy and in the interest of the safety of our studio audience, Jimmy Kimmel Live! will not broadcast tonight," a spokesperson for the show told EW.com.

The funny man had brought the show to his hometown of Brooklyn for a week-long series of shows – but picked the worst week ever. John Goodman and Padma Lakshmi had been scheduled to appear.

Late Show with David Letterman is still set to go ahead without a live audience with Denzel Washington set to promote his new movie Flight.

But both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert canceled Monday's shows and a decision has yet to be made for Tuesday.

Most of the syndicated talk shows like The View and Katie Couric's Katie shuttered taping.

The Good Wife, Person of Interest and Golden Boy also suspended production on Monday.

Nearly 800,000 people have already been left without power with authorities warning that they may switch off power in Manhattan.

The eye of the storm is expected to land at 9pm local time with Atlantic City and New Jersey set for the worst of it.

Stay safe everyone!
