Katy Perry — complete with her new dark, gothic look — appears on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today and opens up a little bit about her new 3-D documentary, Part of Me.

The doc is set for a July 5 release and follows Ms. Perry throughout the rise of her album "Teenage Dream" and divorce from Russell Brand.

Ellen DeGeneres asked Katy why she felt it was important to show the ugly sides of her life rather than the sparkle and glitter of a young, pretty millionaire pop star in her prime.

“I think sometimes people think that we’re perfect, and we know we’re not perfect, at all,” she said. “I think it’s important [to] start breaking down the idea that, to achieve your dream, you always have to be perfect, or flawless, or live in some kind of fantasy world."

So will we see the raw emotions of her broken heart in the new movie? Yes, she says, but in a "tasteful way."

"It’s about how I go there and the ride along the way — which can be bumpy. But, mostly, it was extremely fun," she told Ellen, accentuating how often she heard "no" and how she was dropped from several record labels before hitting her stride.

Admirers of the singer can rest easy — Katy is once again a single woman after ending a brief fling with Florence and The Machine guitarist, Robert Ackroyd.

Russell for his part has only nice things to say about his ex-wife of year. He too visited the talk show host last week and called Katy a "beautiful human being" opining that sometimes relationships just don't work out, but that he wishes nothing but positivity for her.
