We haven't seen too much of Lauren Conrad since she exited The Hills in 2009, but the author and budding designer's been hard at work on her own line, Paper Crown, and penning a series of New York Times best-selling titles (Sweet Little Lies, L.A Candy).

Another thing that's kept her busy? Dating. Loads of it.

"You don't want a slob, but you don't want a guy who is constantly borrowing your tweezers," the ex-reality star, who's now dating musician William Tell, told Allure. "The last year and a half, I was dating a lot, and it's slim pickings."

She was "set up" with William and didn't have high hopes.

"What was nice about us is we both went in with preconceptions, but they were quickly broken," she added, including one of her cardinal dating rules: no kissing on a first date.

Fans of the MTV hit show remember her somewhat stormy relationship with Brody Jenner, where the good-looking couple just couldn't seem to make it work. Was that a genuine relationship or just a stunt for TV?

"Brody and I did date," she confirms. "It was pretty brief. There was definitely editing to drag it out."

What about everything else? The petty catfights? Kristin Cavallari's villainous acts? Speidi? All real? Really?

"I think the story they told wasn't a dishonest one. The way they did it sometimes was," she said. "[The cameras] aren't going to be there for everything. Sometimes two of their main characters will get into a fight, and that's important to the story line. The [producers] need that reenacted. Their thing was always: It did happen. They're not making this up: you just didn't see it."
