Yesterday on the Today show, Kathie Lee Gifford mistakenly asked Martin Short how he and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, keep the sparks strong after 36 years. Embarrassing, considering Nancy passed away from ovarian cancer in August of 2010.

While Martin played along and said he was "madly in love," once the cameras stopped rolling he let Kathie in on the sad news.

Kathie apologized on-air and Tweeted her "sincerest apologies" adding that Martin "handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I'm so grateful."

When E! reporters asked Martin for his thoughts on the show he answered with only calmness and respect.

"I think that it's live television and people make mistakes and there's no ill will intended," he said. "And I think it's nice to aspire to be that way."
