It's been a long time coming, but Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts will finally be working together for the first time. Talks of Meryl and Julia teaming up to bring August: Osage County to the big screen began last year, and now it's confirmed.
The Weinstein Company confirmed (via Entertainment Weekly) the good news today that the Oscar-winning actresses will star in the John Wells-directed film.
August: Osage County tells the story of an Oklahoma family that reunites after the death of the family patriarch. Meryl will play the pill-popping matriarch Violet, and Julia will play her daughter, Barbara.
In a statement, Julia said, “After seeing Meryl Streep’s mesmerizing portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, it has me even more excited and proud to co-star with her."
And Wells is very excited to direct both of these stars!
“Meryl’s extraordinary body of work made her the only conceivable choice to play Violet," he said in a statement. "Coupled with Julia’s effortless mastery of every role she undertakes and her fearlessness as an actress, I’m confident this first-ever collaboration with Meryl and Julia will produce an exciting and moving film.”
We're confident he's right!
