Nobody wants a bad hair day, let alone a bad hair cut! Since we’ve all been there (even superdiva Pink recently showed up on the red carpet with a questionable crop — then blamed her hairdresser via Twitter), we decided to help make sure you never end up with a hair don’t again. (Listen up, Pink!)

Always bring a picture. “We stylists are visual people,” says hair guru Paul Labrecque of the Paul Labrecque Salon and Spa who’s styled the likes of Rihanna and Kate Hudson. “It’s the easiest way to communicate what you want.”  The Gisele waves and cut you think of may be very different than the ones your stylist recalls. “Plus, your stylist will be able to explain whether or not the look will work with your hair texture and length, as well as your face shape.”

Be vocal. It’s easier to change direction earlier in the cut than once she’s finished snipping. So start by having your stylist show you how much she’s actually going to take off, and ask questions along the way. “You should be comfortable and confident–and it’s ok to change your mind at the last minute if you’re having second thoughts,” says Paul.

Tell the truth about your getting ready routine. Whether you always air dry your locks, hate using product, or are willing to spend hours styling and straightening, let the hair dresser know. This way they can create a cut that will actually work with your lifestyle and look great when you do it yourself instead of only looking good when you first leave the salon!
