It’s been little over a year since Jaycee Dugard was recovered after her abduction in 1991. Now free, Jaycee spends her days reliving her 18 years in captivity as she prepares for her book which chronicles her time imprisoned by Phillip and Nancy Garrido. This week’s issue of OK! takes a look into how Jaycee is coping with and moving on from her traumatic past in her upcoming memoir.

Jaycee wasn’t the only one whose life was turned upside down by her reappearance. Kidnapped at age 11, Jaycee is now 30 with two children —Starlet, 16, and Angel, 12 — both of whom were fathered by Phillip.

Her daughters, who are described as “polite” and “well mannered,” grew up believing Nancy [Jaycee's female abductor] was their mom, but Jaycee’s stepfather Carl Probyn tells OK! that with therapists’ help the girls have now learned the truth and are doing as well as can be expected.

“A whole team of therapists is helping and protecting them,” says Carl.

Staying connected with her family seems to be top on Jaycee’s priority list. Her mother, Terry, has been treating Jaycee to homecooked meals, a far cry from the bugs and rotten food that she ate while in captivity.

Jaycee spends her days with Starlet and Angel, as well as with her half sister Shayna, 20, who was just a baby when she was abducted.

In August, Jaycee went on family vacation, camping just 60 miles away from where she had been held. The proximity to the Garrido’s Antioch horror house didn’t dampen Jaycee’s mood as she was seen canoeing, picnicking and taking pictures.

Jaycee is still putting her life back together and the community of the Northern Californian town where she’s settled does their best to help her do so. Jaycee is left alone for the most part and community members are known for being fiercely protective of the family.
