Andrew Garfield Gets Rhys Ifans for 'Spider-Man' Villain

Andrew Garfield, meet your match. Rhys Ifans is set to play the villain in the new Spider-Man movie.

We already learned that Andrew is playing Peter Parker with Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, and now the Spider-Man villain has been found.

Rhys was announced to star as the villain of Super-Man in a statement made by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, (via Deadline) and the film will begin production in December.

The film will be released nationwide in 3-D on July 3, 2012 and be directed by Marc Webb.

“We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans," Tolmach said in the statement. "After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, we’re in awe of his talent and think he’s the perfect choice to take on this role.”

As for what character Rhys will specifically be playing that is still being kept secret. But the film's director said: “What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys' incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character."
