Last night, five couples that have fought to reach the finals learned their fate. Shawn Johnson and Derek Houghmade their mark on Monday night, finishing at the top of the leader board with a score of 59. Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy found themselves on the bottom with a score of 54 despite some serious Speedo action. Only three couples can advance to the finals….
Apolo Anton Ohno was the first celebrity to be eliminated on the results show Tuesday night. Despite being chosen for the encore performance, this Olympian speedskater and his partner, Karina Smirnoff, just didn’t have enough votes.
While Apolo looked like he was expecting this fate, it didn’t make it any easier for fans watching from home. “This competition was hard from the beginning,” Apolo explained. “Karina’s a champion. I’ve learned so much about her, she’s taught me so much about myself.”
The gold medalist took his bow, but not without thanking everyone on the show and his fans. “Every single person who does this show is a champion because it forces you to become a champion in your own right.”
The other celebrity who didn’t have enough votes to get into next week’s finals? Emmitt Smith. “It’s been a tremendous experience,” he said. “Season 3 was something else, but this right here takes it over the top.” Host Tom Bergeron couldn’t have put it better when he said, “After tonight, this show’s lost a chunk of charisma.”
Shawn and Derek were the first to learn their fate. “You’re going to the finals!” Tom shouted. Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani managed to escape the double elimination – as did Kelly and Val. You know what that means, right? The Dancing With the Stars finale will feature three women competing for the Mirrorball trophy!
Last night, The Wanted performed two of their hits “I Found You“ and “Glad You Came” to the delight of millions of teenage girls, even receiving a standing ovation from the judges and crowd. “A little pleasure before the pain,” as Tom put it.
Paula Abdul ended the night with a medley of her #1 hits: “Straight Up,” “Forever Your Girl,” “Cold Hearted” and “Opposites Attract”. The performance called “Paula’s Dream Medley” featured… a lot of different types of media! “It’s Paula’s dream, so anything can happen,” she said before taking the stage.
As for the finals, here’s what we learned last night:
The finalists will receive their music live on the air for an instant dance round.
There will be a super-sized freestyle that is completely up to the couple’s creative discretion.
The All-Stars get to select a favorite dance. We have a few ideas in case they get stuck!
