To show their respect for the victims and people involved in Friday night's horrible shootings in Aurora, Colorado, at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight RisesChristopher Nolan's final film in the Batman series, Hollywood studios did not reveal the box office numbers over the weekend.

Earnings have now been released and according to the Associated Press, the film earned an estimated $160 million during its opening weekend, beating out The Dark Knight which opened at $158 million in 2008.

The man accussed of the masscare at a movie theatre which killed 12 people and injured 59 others is 24-year-old James Holmes. He told police he was "The Joker" upon his arrest and appeared in court for the first time Monday.

Anne Hathaway who plays Selina in the film released a statement regarding the tragic event.

"My heart aches and breaks for the lives taken and altered by this unfathomable senseless act," she said. "I am at a loss for words how to express my sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."
