Last month, Demi announced she was quitting Disney Channel's Sonny With a Chance and sat down for candid interviews about her eating disorder.

Her decision to Tweet the bikini pic was partly the result of her new outlook on life, she explained on Twitter.

"I never thought I'd ever feel confident enough to ever do that. I'm excited how far I've come since being completely ashamed of my body," Demi wrote. "I want any girl/guy out there who struggles with body image or confidence to know that it IS possible to find peace with yourself. It hasn't been easy, but it starts with a commitment to yourself. . .your mind. . .and your soul. And trust me, I'm still working at it! Haha."

Demi is now a contributing editor for Seventeen and the 18-year-old star recently shared a message to other teenage girls.

“If you are going through that dark period, go to your family and closest friends. Don’t put yourself in danger. It’s very crucial that you get your feelings out – but don’t ever inflict harm on your own body because your body is so sacred,” she explains to Seventeen (Via Just Jared Jr.). “I wish I could tell every young girl with an eating disorder, or who has harmed herself in any way, that she’s worthy of life and that her life has meaning. You can overcome and get through anything.”

But that doesn’t mean it won’t be a constant battle.

“Yes, there have been times when I definitely have been tempted to get rid of my dinner,” she admits. “But I will deal with it for the rest of my life because it’s a life-long disease. I don’t think there’s going to be a day when I don’t think about food or my body, but I’m living with it, and I wish I could tell young girls to find their safe place and stay with it.”
