Gary Winick, '13 Going on 30' Director, Dies at 49

On Sunday night when Hollywood was celebrating its crown jewel of awards shows, it received some sad news. Filmmaker Gary Winick passed away from brain cancer. He was 49.

According to PopEater, his manager, Rossalie Swedlin said, "He was suffering from brain cancer for quite some time, and it ultimately metastasized throughout his body." She added, "What's remarkable is that after his first surgery, he was able to direct Letters to Juliet. It was a battle that we thought he had won, and ultimately they just didn't get it all."

Perhaps most known for his films Charlotte's Web, Letters to Juliet and 13 Going on 30, Gary's legacy also includes making a significant impact in the digital film revolution. He was one of the founders of InDigEnt which stands for Independent Digital Entertainment, an organization that encouraged indie filmmakers to shoot on digital cameras and for under $100,000.
