Harry Morgan, an Emmy-winning actor most known for playing Colonel Potter on the hit show M*A*S*H died yesterday after a battle with pneumonia. He was 96.

Playing a career soldier who took command of the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital unit in Korea at the start of the fourth season of M*A*S*H, he quickly became known for his cutting wit. According to Reuters, he played the role for the following seven seasons and the short-lived spinoff, AfterMash. Before earning the Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1980, Harry starred in other popular shows as well. In the '60s he starred in Dragnet and Pete and Gladys. Although he also acted in over 100 movies, his role on M*A*S*H defined his career. During a 1983 news conference after the final episode of the hit series, he cried and told reporters, "I'm feeling very sad and sentimental. I don't know if M*A*S*H made me a better actor but I know it made me a better human being."
