During his seven-month engagement to Kat Von D, Jesse James never lost contact with Sandra Bullock. But now that he’s single, his calls have been coming more frequently. “Jesse is beyond persistent,” says an insider in the new issue of OK!. “Now the floodgates have opened. He’s been calling a lot. He really has no one else to turn to, and it’s obvious he’s in a desperate place.”

Even though Jesse, 42, and Kat, 29, broke up after she reportedly accused him of cheating with another woman — circumstances eerily similar to the events that led to Jesse and Sandra’s divorce in 2010 — Sandra, 47, still has a soft spot for her ex-husband. “No matter how much he’s hurt her, Sandra still doesn’t like watching him suffer,” says the insider. “She swears she has no feelings left for him but pity, but the truth is a little more complicated than that.”

Many of Sandra’s friends fear that these lingering emotions could bring Jesse back into her life — an event that is, in a way, almost understandable: The couple were married for five years and had even begun the process of adopting Sandra’s son, Louis, 19 months, before their split. Says the insider: “Her friends are worried enough to urge Sandy not to even take Jesse’s phone calls."

Beyond reports of Jesse having cheated on his fiancée, Jesse’s inability to put Sandra behind him may have helped drive that wedge between him and Kat. One of the couple’s biggest issues was Jesse’s reluctance to move away from Austin, Texas (where Sandra is based), to Los Angeles, where Kat lives.
