John Travolta and Kelly Preston are lucky enough to be blessed with the opportunity to put their celebrity resources to good use: The stars brought much-needed supplies to Haiti to help those suffering in the aftermath of the earthquake that hit the island nation on Jan. 12. “We flew down 22 doctors with seven tons of supplies, medicines, foods [and] surgical equipment,” John told reporters at last night’s NYC premiere of From Paris With Love.
“The good news, in a nutshell, is everything we brought down, we actually were certain that we used because we got a report from our personal doctors,” adds John.
The medical supplies are an urgent need in Haiti now, as hospitals are overflowing and doctors are struggling to care for all the injured. Kelly says she’s relieved to know those supplies are being put to use immediately.
“They’re using them in the hospitals now, they’ve been able to perform quite a few surgeries, help so many people, take the formula and the diapers and everything to the orphanages,” Kelly explained. “It’s wonderful.”
Before jetting down to Haiti, John and Kelly got organized to deal with the situation, preparing everything they’d need in advance.
“We got a list prior to going down there,” John revealed. Our doctors that we already knew on the spot gave us a list. We basically shopped for it, brought it down and gave them what they needed.”
Volunteer ministers from the churches in Haiti have stayed in contact with John and Kelly by satellite phone as they distribute the supplies. The couple also witnessed the situation firsthand to help assess what is needed.
“This little boy who had lost his whole family, and he was only 7,” John remembers of their visit. “He was walking with a limp because he had been hurt, and all he wanted to do was see the inside of our plane, so we took him through and gave him treats and all that stuff. To think that he doesn’t have a family now is pretty rough.”
