Joseph Brooks, "You Light Up My Life" Songwriter, Dies From Apparent Suicide at 73

Joseph Brooks, Oscar/Grammy winning songwriter of the hit '70s  ballad “You Light Up My Life,” was found dead Sunday afternoon at his home from an apparent suicide. He was 73. 

Joseph was found dead at his residence by a friend with whom he was supposed to have lunch, police officials told CNN.

The songwriter was found near a helium tank with a tube attached into a dry cleaning bag over his head and a towel wrapped around his neck, according to police.

Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne told CNN Joseph also left a suicide note.

Two years ago, Joseph was charged in the alleged rapes of 11 women and was currently awaiting trial.

In a separate instant, Christopher Brooks, Joseph's son, had been charged in the death of his former girlfriend, a swimsuit designer, and could serve up to 25 years in jail.

Joseph's hit ballad "You Light Up My Life" was featured in the 1977 film of the same name, which he directed and produced. It won best original song at the 1977 Oscars and was named song of the year at the 1978 Grammys.

The song was performed by Kasey Cisyk in the movie, but grew to larger fame after being recorded by Debby Boone, who won a Grammy for Best New Artist.
