On Wednesday night, Johnny flew into an unexplained rampage, which resulted in him killing his landlady, Catherine Davis, strangling her cat, physically assaulting two men and then jumping (or falling) to his death from an L.A.-area home.
The actor had a long history of drug abuse and criminal behavior (he had just been released from jail), and pals say they weren't surprised to hear of the fatal turn of events.
Katy Perry dated Johnny in 2005 and 2006 and was "devastated" to hear of her old flame's tragic death. The singer split with him due to his troubles so she could focus on her career.
What nobody could have predicted, however, was the actor's ties to Scientology.
His parents were long-time supporters of L. Ron Hubbard's teachings and enrolled their son in the Scientology-approved drug rehabilitation program, Narcanon, in 2004. Regardless of the fact Johnny's probation officers knew he was spiraling out of control, Narcanon used his likeness as one of the rehab program's success stories until he was deleted about 48 hours ago.

So what drug was Johnny doing?
L.A. investigators are pinpointing a new designer drug "Smiles" which is categorized as a 2C-I — a psychedelic with amphetamine qualities — as the street substance he may have ingested before the incident.
Smiles has spread across the country in terrifying speed, leaving a band of overdoses and "bad trip" horror stories in its wake. The drug is characterized as being particularly harmful to those who have "psychotic" tendencies, particularly if too much, or a "bad batch" is ingested.
