Kris Humphries walked into a hot spot on New York City’s Lower East Side on Sept. 16 — not unusual, except he was sans brand-new wife Kim Kardashian. The newlywed, wearing a blue sweater and a lost look on his face, spoke to a waiter and then stalked off to join some male friends in a back room.
“He seemed a little confused,” a witness who saw Kris at Beauty & Essex tells OK!. Could this moodiness be related to his marriage? OK! explores the new couple’s adjusting relationship in this week’s issue, on sale everywhere now!
Adjusting to their new married life in NYC hasn’t been completely smooth for Kris and Kim — the newlyweds’ attention was pulled in seemingly hundreds of different directions. During the all-important New York Fashion Week, Kim was busy simultaneously launching her clothing line at Sears and filming Kourtney & Kim Take New York. Kris appeared at several events around the city sans his new bride.
To make matters worse, several negative stories about the couple’s marriage were published, putting extra heat on Kim and Kris’ every move. Reports of the couple’s tense bickering, Kim’s family’s dislike of Kris and the NBA player’s growing unease with life in the limelight fueled speculation that their young marriage was doomed. Some gossips even whispered that an annulment was possible.
“Kim has a thick skin and she acts like she doesn’t care, but it does bother her,” says a friend. “She doesn’t understand why people hate her or what she did to deserve it, but she knows it comes with the territory.”
Adds another insider: “Kim is really upset that people are saying she and Kris are having problems. She’s telling everyone that it’s totally false. She feels like some people are just out to get her and can’t be happy unless she’s miserable.”
But like any newlyweds, once the emotional high of a wedding has come and gone, there are growing pains. Kim, for example, picked up her life on the West Coast and moved to New York for her new husband. Kris, meanwhile, left his quiet apartment across the river in Hoboken, N.J., and entered Kim’s splashy world!
“It’s overwhelming,” Kim’s pal Jonathan Cheban admits. “The first week, there were 200 people outside their hotel waiting for them every day. There are people camping out at 2 in the morning — not photographers, fans! It’s a lot for a guy from Minnesota.”
Kris worries, particularly, how his parents will react to reports that his marriage to Kim is already on the rocks. Both he and Kim have assured them, and all of their closest friends, that they aren’t headed for a split.
“They’re not going to do anything drastic about their marriage now. Kim was appalled that anyone would even suggest that,” says another Kim friend. “She loves Kris and he loves her. Sure,
there are some adjustments he is making to live in the public eye, but he’s been doing a great job of it.”
