In the new issue of OK!, journalist Daphne Barak recounts her experience with a thinner, happier Kirstie Alley.
It was lunchtime at the Villa d’Este Hotel on Lake Como in Italy at the beginning of September 2010. As I was stepping off my boat, I heard someone say, “Life is so beautiful here. I wish I could live here.” I saw that it was Kirstie Alley, sitting with her two children, William True and Lillie, and another woman.
Compared to the last photo I’d seen of her, on the cover of a magazine, she looked thinner. So I said, “Wow! You lost a lot of weight.” Then I started to apologize for my candor, but Kirstie was delighted. “I am so happy to hear you say that,” she told me. “My children will tell you how hard I am working to shed every pound. This time, they are helping me and they’re taking part in how I am losing it. We talk openly about it.”
Kirstie, who’d lost a good deal of weight once before, had gained it all back, and then some, when that photo was taken. Now I was looking at a woman 60 pounds slimmer. Instead of using any planned diets, Kirstie said she’d found “what works best for me! And I found out how I could lose weight and keep it off. I am taking real steps to make it happen.”
And indeed, Kirstie did succeed — by the time I saw her again, at her launch of Organic Liaison (a shop in L.A. and online store), the whole world was seeing what I’d witnessed in Italy: a happy and slimmed-down Kirstie, dancing her heart out on Dancing With the Stars with her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
She told me she agreed to compete on Dancing With the Stars (where she’s reportedly already shed more than 30 more pounds) because she wanted to inspire other women. “There’s no reason to be ashamed of your body. It’s important to me that my kids are proud of what I stand for.” She also says she’s been on her Organic Liaison plan, with customized organic ingredients and recipes, for months now. Using organic ingredients, Kirstie says, could make you more energetic and decrease the number of toxins in your body — and in your life.
Try to get her to bad-mouth one of her fellow contestants and Kirstie will only come up with a good-natured, diplomatic response. She’s also very happy with her partner, Maksim, who she says “makes me work very hard, but we have become friends.”
