Kris Allen tried to bring some new music to his fans last night in Santa Monica, Calif., but that all came to an end when the police got involved.

The American Idol winner Tweeted his fans early in the day yesterday that he was planning a surprise concert and that details would soon be revealed.

"Who wants to go to the beach and watch some guy play some tunes? Hear he's ok." And then, a few hours later, "How bout the pier in Santa Monica? 8 pm. You...me...couple tunes...ocean breeze...birds pooping on us. It's gonna be great."

OK! NEWS: KRIS ALLEN CHATS ABOUT HIS ANTI-BULLYING 'THE VISION OF LOVE' VIDEO AND THE MARIAH CAREY CONNECTION

Local fans flocked to the Santa Monica Pier, where they finally spotted Kris and his guitar. As Kris played songs from his new album — including his single, "The Vision of Love," and new covers like Justin Timberlake's "What Goes Around Comes Around" — the crowd kept getting bigger and bigger.

After almost an hour of performing, Kris was in the middle of a new song called "Should I" (which didn't make the new album), a cop came over and told Kris he wasn't allowed to perform on the pier without a permit. But according to sources, the officer was very rude and wouldn't even be nice about it when Kris tried to shake his hand.

Fans all over the world were following it all on Twitter, and #FreeKrisAllen ended up trending worldwide — even though, luckily for Kris, he wasn't arrested.

After his crazy night, Kris Tweeted: "Well I wasn't expecting anything from tonight but that's not what I expected. Getting stopped by the cops never crossed my mind. Thanks to everyone that came out. Had a good time. And to the people that just stopped...thanks for stopping. Btw I didn't mean any disrespect to other street performers out there. I respect them so much for what they do."

What a crazy night! Kris' new album, Thank You Camellia, hits stores on May 22.
