American Idol execs knew they were doling out a massive pay day for a massive ego when they hired Mariah Carey, but nobody could have anticipated the diva's explosive reaction to the news that Nicki Minaj was hired yesterday.

Sources close to the FOX show say Mariah was so irate about the decision she hung up the phone when told the Starships singer would hold court with her on the judging panel. Mariah, they say, doesn't want to compete with a much younger woman and would rather be the only lady on the show, like Jennifer Lopez before her.

Mariah offered her suggestion as a possible replacement on Twitter yesterday, attaching an old picture of her and Lenny Kravitz with the friendly message to American Idol: "What's going on? need the info!! What about this combo? : ) if we could ever get him to do it."

Lenny replied warmly to both Mariah and American Idol saying: "Girl, we've known each other since we were teenagers. How fun would that be?!"

Her feed was then quickly full of followers and fans agreeing with the singer, saying they'd love to see Lenny on the show.

No word on whether the network will take her up on the suggestion and still no word on Randy Jackson's future either. In fact, the higher-ups are tossing around the idea of bringing back a four-judge panel to balance out the two women with two men and maybe even hiring Randy as a mentor instead of full-time judge.

Enrique Iglesias, Brad Paisley and Keith Urban are on FOX's male short list so far, but honestly we like Mariah's suggestion and wouldn't mind seeing Lenny several times a week on TV either.
