She’s just 24-years-old but Mary-Kate Olsen has grown up on TV, co-founded a business empire with her sister Ashley and launched a highly successful fashion line, but the twin has mixed feelings about her childhood.
Mary-Kate talked about her strange early life, growing from the cradle to adolescence in front of the camera, to Marie Claire magazine, confessing that she and Ashley were “performing monkeys”.
Today Mary-Kate’s life is more low key as she focuses on designing The Row and Ashley’s lower-priced Olsenboye line for JCPenney, saying, “it’s kind of like a mask to hide behind.”
How does Mary-Kate feel about being a child star? “I look at old photos of me, and I don’t feel connected to them at all…” she says. “I would never wish my upbringing on anyone…”
After struggling to adapt from her unusual childhood to a normal life, Mary-Kate says, “I think it’s really important to be able to talk when something’s wrong. I learned at a really young age that if you don’t talk about it, it can drive you insane.”
While Ashley has sworn off acting, Mary Kate isn’t averse to performing again, but fashion is very much her day job. “I still read scripts, and if something great comes along, that’s great … but this is my day job. The Row is where I go every day.”
