Pretty Little Liars’ summer premiere airs Tuesday, June 10 at 8/7c and everyone in Rosewood better watch their backs because it certainly sounds like the unlikely duo of Lucas and Mona may be in cahoots to shake things up. Brendan Robinson chats with OK! about the new sides we’ll see to Lucas as well as his all-time favorite PLL fan conspiracy theory.
OK!: We hear you’ve been working with Janel Parrish (Mona) a lot this season.
Brendan Robinson: I am! I have at least one scene of every episode I’m in with her. We’re good friends off camera, which everybody is usually always really surprised about which I get because in the past Mona’s been really awful to Lucas. But we’re good friends and we’re really happy to be working together.
OK!: What do you like about where Lucas is headed?
BR: I’m really, really grateful for the opportunity to kind of move into a completely different direction with the character. When we first met Lucas in season one he was very self-deprecating and very proud of his nerd-dom, if you will, and then kind of moved into this whole distressed henchman thing—very nervous and up to no good. Now we’re moving into this version of Lucas where he’s kind of coming into his own as a person and I think it’s fun to do that with this age group, to be able to see that with a teenager and to see a change in finding yourself from a teenage boy’s perspective. We’ve seen it with the girls and the transformation with the girls and I’m flattered they’ve asked me to be the one to take that on (for the guys).
OK!: What’s been your favorite fan conspiracy theory?
BR: I think Holly (Marie Combs) would appreciate this—that Mrs. Montgomery is A. Where did that come from? And then anything where someone tweets a picture from set there’s always some kind of theory that’s happening. Even if it’s not a spoiler, let’s say it’s just that Lucas and Mona have a scene together everyone’s like, “Ugh, they’re up to no good!” It’s great. It keeps the show exciting and I think the writers have done a great job with mixing up the character interactions and dynamic.
OK!: What’s one thing fans of the show might be surprised to learn about Janel?
BR: That she’s really, really sweet. She’s not like her character at all. I don’t think she has an evil bone in her body. And she’s really funny. Janel and Sasha (Pieterse)—they couldn’t be more different from the people that they play. They’re some of the sweetest girls ever.
