Even the good die young, and in this case, the demise of Paul the Octopus, at age 2 and a half, has fans around the world saddened by his passing. Paul correctly predicted results for the 2010 World Cup. He died in his tank this morning in the western German city of Oberhausen, spokeswoman Ariane Vieregge said.

According to The Associated Press, he died of natural causes sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

“We had all naturally grown very fond of him and he will be sorely missed,” Sea Life manager Stefan Porwoll said in a statement.

“We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds, and erect a modest permanent shrine,” he added of the arrangements for commemorating the sea creature.
