OK! NEWS: ASHLEE SIMPSON & PETE WENTZ INVOLVED IN CUSTODY BATTLE

"It's like the one time on earth I'm like, 'Thank God Charlie Sheen exists!'" Pete explained on On Air with Ryan Seacrest about being glad the state of his marriage is staying out of the headlines right now.

Ashlee filed for divorce from Pete on Feb. 9 citing "irreconcilable differences" and requesting joint legal custody, primary physical custody of their son Bronx, spousal and child support.

"I mean ... I think that one of the hardest things is that when you're in the public profile, it’s hard to maintain your private life, especially when there's a kid involved," Pete explained.

"Ashlee's been my best friend for five years, she's the mother of my child, I have nothing but love and respect for her," he added. "Going through something like this isn't easy, but we’re friends and we put our son first."

And their two-year-old son is doing "awesome."

"Everything's a new discovery for him," Pete said. "His new thing is hiding cell phones and credit cards and stuff. I'm like, 'So where's dad's cell phone?' And he laughs. He thinks it's like a comedy bit."
