Piers Morgan, the editor of the Daily Mirror from 1995 to 2004, says he was not aware of any phone hacking taking place within the company while he was in charge.

"I have no reason...to believe it was going on," Piers told the Leveson Inquiry via video link, adding that he was not "directly involved" in the use of private investigators.

"All journalists knew they had to operate within the law. That was enshrined in their contracts of employment," the CNN newsman said. "The average editor is probably aware of about 5 percent of what his journalists are up to at any given time."

Piers, who was also the editor of The News of the World from January 1995 to November 1995, stated, "Not a single person has made a formal or legal complaint against the Daily Mirror for phone hacking," before addressing a recording of a voicemail message from Sir Paul McCartney to his former wife Heather Mills that the Daily Mirror obtained while the couple was having marriage problems.

Although he did admit to listening to the tape, Piers defended the fact that the recording wasn't illegal, stating, "listening to someone talking to someone else" isn't unethical. "All we know for a fact about Lady Heather Mills McCartney is that in their divorce case Paul McCartney stated as a fact that she had recorded their conversations and given them to the media," Piers said.
