Pres. Obama Offers Condolences to Elizabeth Edwards' Family; Reflects on Her Advocacy

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama have released a statement expressing their condolences over the loss of Elizabeth Edwards, the estranged wife of former presidential candidate John Edwards, who passed away yesterday after a six-year battle with breast cancer.

“In her life, Elizabeth Edwards knew tragedy and pain. Many others would have turned inward; many others in the face of such adversity would have given up,” a statement released by the President read.

“But through all that she endured, Elizabeth revealed a kind of fortitude and grace that will long remain a source of inspiration. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.”

REMEMBERING ELIZABETH EDWARDSLIFE IN THE PUBLIC EYE:

Obama also explained that he spoke to members of the Edwards family and offered his deepest sympathy. He called daughter Cate and husband John.

Elizabeth and John separated nearly a year ago after his affair with Rielle Hunter went public. He later admitted to fathering a child with Rielle.

Obama commended Elizabeth during the presidential campaign for her stance on the health care system and poverty.

Vice President Joe Biden also offered his condolences.

Jill and I extend our deepest sympathies to the Edwards family as they grieve during this difficult and painful time.”
