The news broke yesterday, on the anniversary of Prince William and Kate Middletons wedding, that his younger brother Prince Harry had broken up with his girlfriend, Cressida Bonas. There had been rumors that the two were about to get engaged, so the split comes as a major shock. What was going on with the pair?

Royals expert Anne Chertoff tells OKMagazine.com that there have been rumblings of a split for weeks. What broke the couple? It seems that all the speculation and attention about their possible engagement was too much for them both. Bonas just turned 25, and the pressure to settle down and make it official was unappealing. She hid from the attention recently by moving in to the not-so-posh neighborhood of Shepherd’s Bush with a roommate. It “was a sign that she’s still on her own,” says Chertoff. “If they were getting ready to wed she may have looked for flats in an area like Chelsea.”

They also weren’t ready to stop the party, especially Harry. “If he married, he wouldn’t be able to go clubbing and drinking with his friends as he does now,” Chertoff says. Their similar interests in having a good time may actually be what drives them apart!

With all that said, Harry and Bonas were very much in love and so happy together before all the engagement rumors began. Chertoff suggests that this might be a panicky break a la the one William and Kate took before they got engaged. What’s an engagement without a little panic, right? Here’s hoping they work it out.
