Real World: San Francisco fans got some bad news from the show’s cast member Judd Winick.
Sean, who was HIV positive, was just 44 when he reportedly died of the rare lung cancer mesothelioma.
In the early 1990s, Sean, an AIDS activist, appeared on the Real World because of his relationship with cast member Pedro Zamora. The two made history when they became one of the first gay couples to have a commitment ceremony on national television.
Unfortunately, Pedro, who was suffering from AIDS, died in 1994 of complications related to the disease.
After Sean’s stint on the hit MTV reality show, he shied away from the spotlight. In recent years Sean was in a long-term relationship with his life partner, Michael Kaplan, and he had just started a job as a pastry chef at the Washington D.C. restaurant RIS.
“I want to serve desserts and pastries that people recognize and love to eat,” Sean told the Washington Blade in May, “but sometimes with an unexpected twist of surprise.”
