Janelle Monae pops up in all the right places. In the past few weeks, she performed with Prince at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, then she rang in the New Year in Atlanta, and just this weekend, Janelle joined the Obamas at Michelle’s 50th birthday bash in Washington, D.C.

And throughout it all, she dons her signature ‘do.

“It was inspired by Dorothy Dandridge’s eye,” the R&B singer, 28, tells me during the 25th Annual Peach Drop Powered by M&M’s Peanut to ring in the Year Of The Peanut in Atlanta. “It really inspired my hairstyle. It was the shape that if you look into her eyes, that’s what I wanted the shape of my hair to be.”

How did the idea for her signature hair come about?

“I saw a picture of her,” she explains. “A friend of mine sent me one for my birthday, and there’s a picture of her where she’s sitting on a desk. The way they shot her, there was a glare in her eye from the white to the black, and I liked how it contrasted. It made this peculiar and interesting shape, so it went inside the shape of my hair. [laughs]”

Although she won’t reveal exactly how she gets the look—saying “I can’t really tell you. I’m sorry. Then, everybody else will have it. [laughs]“—she gives suggestions about how we, too, can rock a unique look.

“You have to figure out what makes you feel at your best, and once you identify that, figure out what those colors or shapes or fabrics, textures could be – how do you want to express that?”

She continues, “Embrace the things that make you unique, even if it makes others uncomfortable. You can continue to do that for the rest of your life.”
