Rihanna admits that it was her "unconditional love" for Chris Brown that made her go back to him after the R&B singer attacked her on Feb. 8.

"That's embarrassing that that's the type of person I fell in love with" she told Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview with Good Morning America on Thursday.

"So far in love; so unconditional that I went back... its humiliating to say this happened. To accept that? Its a traumatic mistake."

Breaking her silence on the aftermath of that violent night, Rihanna, 21, says she briefly reunited with Chris, 20.

"It's completely normal to go back. You start lying to yourself," she admitted. "I'll say that to any young girl who is going through domestic violence: 'Don't react off of love.'"

The "Disturbia" singer commented on the media maelstrom surrounding her, saying a lot of women “have experienced what I did, but not in the public.”

Chris was sentenced to five years' probation and ordered to do 180 days of community labor as a part of the plea deal he made in June for his assault.

Rihanna realized she had a responsibility as a role model for young women to stay away from him.

"When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result in some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part. I couldn't be held responsible for telling them, 'Go back,'" she said.

"I didn't realize how much of an impact I had on these girls' lives until that happened," she added. "It was a wake-up call for me, big time, especially when I took myself out of the situation."

In Thursday's interview, Rihanna said, "I am strong. This happened to me. I didn't cause this. I didn't do it. This can happen to me and it can happen to anybody."

Rihanna's fourth album, Rated R, hits stores Nov. 23.

Further revelations from Diane’s exclusive interview will air on Friday's Good Morning America and Friday night’s edition of 20/20.
