Shirley Temple Passes Away at 85

Shirley Temple Black, the quintessential child star, has passed away at age 85. The lead of such films as Curly Top, Heidi, A Little Princess, and many more, Shirley delighted the world first as an actress and eventually as a diplomat for the United States. She received huge Hollywood honors, including a Juvenile Academy Award at age six.

Shirley got her start in the industry at the tender age of three. Her cheerful attitude, springy curls, and cherubic face only accented her singing, dancing, and acting talents, and she is credited with giving America some theatrical relief in the years of the Great Depression. She was one of the biggest stars in the world before she hit double digits, and she semi-retired by her teenage years.

Shirley Temple went on to marry twice, have three children, and use her fame for public service. She ran unsuccessfully for congress in the '60s, and was eventually appointed U.S. Ambassador to Ghana in the '70s. She also went on to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Czechoslovakia in the late '80s and early '90s. Her life was full of other honors, such as the Juvenile Academy Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award. She is survived by three children.
