A stage in the process of being constructed for a Madonna show in Marseille, France, collapsed on Thursday, leaving one dead and six injured. Madonna's rep has confirmed the accident.

Madonna was in Udine, Italy at the time and was given the news as she finished soundcheck on a stage at the Stadio Friuli. The accident was confirmed by Madonna spokesperson Liz Rosenberg.

Madonna issued the following statement:  “I am devastated to have just received this tragic news. My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news.”

At the time the stage went down, several works at the Stade Velodrome stadium were underneath. Two of the injuries were serious, Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux told the AP, and all injured were taken to the hospital. The cause of the collapse is still unknown.

Madge's Sticky & Sweet tour was to arrive in Sunday but the concert has now been canceled.

More trouble elsewhere for Madonna's tour, as Roman Catholics in Poland are none too pleased that the singer is bringing her tour to their capital on the day they celebrate the heavenly assumption of the other Madonna, the Virgin Mary.

Madge's Sticky & Sweet tour is supposed to arrive in Warsaw on Aug. 15, but many are protesting that plan, as it's a holiday in the Catholic church.

Marian Brudzynski, the leader of the Catholic group Committee for the Protection of Faith and National Traditions, told the Associated Press Thursday he is outraged by the timing and is planning two weeks of protests starting July 31.
