"She's funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better…I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that…I'm just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special."
Talk about bad timing! That was Tom Cruise, rhapsodizing in the June issue of Playboy magazine about his charmed life with wife Katie Holmes. But as Star readers know, the rosy picture Tom has taken great pains to paint publicly about their relationship is at odds with the reported behind-the-scenes turmoil of their strange five year-marriage. So for many, the question has not been whether Katie would take the ultimate step to escape — but when.
The answer came on June 28, when Katie, 33, reportedly filed for divorce from Tom, 50, in NYC — and asked for sole legal and primary custody of their 6-year-old daughter, Suri.
"Katie knows she'll have to fight on her hands, going up against the biggest superstar in Hollywood," a source tells Star. "But she's finally found the strength to get herself out of a bad situation with Tom and back to living her own life — and she's ready to do what she needs to do."
Starting with reports that Katie was given a "marriage contract" to tie the knot with Tom, their union has been marked by seemingly unending details about Tom's obsessive control over every aspect of Katie's life, from Scientology "auditing" sessions to what roles she could choose for her faltering acting career. Now insiders tell Star that even darker secrets about Katie living in his shadow are coming to light.
"Katie's been unhappy for the longest time, and she'd been calling friends for a shoulder to cry on," says a source. "But Tom had taken to having their home phones and her cell phone and email monitored, so Katie had to be walking on eggshells even more."
