When it comes to working out, I have a bit of ADD. I need to switch up my workouts pretty frequently in order to stay focused and interested so, with that in mind, I’ve been meaning to try Pound, a full-body cardio class using constant simulated drumming. And while the class is offered several times a week at my gym and I’ve even interviewed creators Kirsten Potenza and Cristina Peerenboom, it seemed like I could just never get myself there…until now.
Going into the class I was a little nervous because I have zero rhythm and two left feet. But with my Ripstix, lightly-weighted drumsticks designed specifically for Pound, in hand, I was determined to give it a go. Plus when I chatted with them, Kirsten and Cristina swore that if I could clap my hands I could Pound. We’ll see about that…
For starters, the music used in the class is amazing and totally made me want to channel my inner rock star (you know, the one without rhythm) and the drumming was a great aggression release. I also loved how quickly each song/interval seemed to fly right by so there was no time to get bored. But I will say, this class was humbling in that it did reinforce the fact that I indeed struggle with choreography and rhythm. Once I was able to shake that embarrassment and remind myself that everyone else in the class was focused on their own workout, not mine, I had a lot of fun with it. And because I’m freakishly competitive, I’m determined to go back and get better at it.
It really is a full-body workout filled with lots of arm movement (obviously), squatting, leg lifts, ab moves and more. The pace switches back and forth between moderate and fast so you get plenty of cardio while also toning muscle. I was really worried tripping up on the choreography would interfere with the effectiveness of my workout, but if my wobbly legs post-class are any indication of how I’m going to feel when I wake up tomorrow, I think I definitely got my hour’s worth of exercise in and then some. Seriously, who knew a class could make it hard for a person to walk down stairs?
