Today’s #TBT combines the two things we love the most in the world—the ’90s, and our moms! Whether you’re looking to make a Mother’s Day playlist or just want to get weak in the knees hearing Justin Timberlake gush about his mother, let’s take a listen back to the best songs from the ’90s that were written for or about the artist’s mamas.
Backstreet Boys, “The Perfect Fan.” Sure, this wasn’t the most catchy song on BSB’s Millenium album, but it sure was the sweetest! Listen carefully to the lyrics and you’ll totally understand that it’s dedicated to their mothers.
Ozzy Osbourne, “Mama I’m Coming Home.” Technically this 1991 rock single is about Ozzy’s wife, Sharon, whom he calls “mama.” But considering Sharon is the mother of Ozzy’s kids, this works, right?
Snoop Dogg, “I Love My Momma.” This track appeared on Snoop’s 1999 album, No Limit Top Dogg. See? Even rappers have a soft side.
Boyz II Men, “A Song for Mama.” These guys are known for their romantic ballads, but the guys wrote this classic tune for their momsin 1997. It’s actually about keeping on with family traditions.
2Pac, “Dear Mama.” In 1995, 2Pac dedicated a song to his mama, who was pregnant with him while in jail. Best lyric? “Even as a crack queen, mama, you always was a black queen, mama.” Ah. That’s love.
*NSYNC, “God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You.” Fun fact—no, this classic *NSYNC tune is not about a girl. It’s about five women, also known as the band members’ moms! The music video, featuring a mother and child growing up together, proves it.
LL Cool J, “Mama Said Knock You Out.” It’s not a sentimental song whatsoever, but apparently this 1990 hit was inspired by LL’s grandmother telling him to “knock out” his critics after a rough patch in his career. Proof that listening to your grandmother can lead to good things, guys.
Spice Girls, “Mama.” Mel B. had the idea to write a song for their moms and it then appeared on the Spice Girls’ debut album. Years later during their 2008 reunion tour, the girls performed this song live on stage with pictures of them and their kids on the screen behind them, and sometimes their kids would even come out on stage, too! Full circle.
