Katherine Heigl's family picture may seem perfect, but when Katherine and her husband Josh Kelley became new parents to their adopted daughter Naleigh it was a bit of a learning experience. In the November issue of Redbook, Katherine opens up adjusting to being a new mom.

"She was really quiet, just watching everybody and everything, and I was kind of the same: I was kind of scared too," Katherine admits to Redbook in the new issue about her daughter's arrival. "It was like, 'There's no turning back now. This is my child. Oh, my God, I hope I do this right.' "

But Katherine and her musician husband Josh's decision to adopt Naleigh was easy.

"When she was finally in my arms, I was so relieved... now I got to hold her and smell her and know her. We still talk about having biological children as well — I'm not ruling anything out... Adoption has been a part of my life and a part of my family, so it was how I wanted to start," the Life As We Know It star explains. "It felt natural and right to me."

And it came just as naturally for Josh — in his own way.

"He's a great dad. I didn't expect it: He's such a guy... I adore him, I can't imagine being with another man, but he can be very self-absorbed. Not in an egomaniacal way, just kind of in his own head and unfocused on anything other than his own stuff," Katherine said of her husband. "So I was really surprised by how on top of it and how connected he is."

And it sounds like Josh admits he's changed his selfish ways as well as he recently told OK!, "“I think it’s made us a lot more selfless. There’s no room to be self-absorbed when you have a kid so we’ve definitely become more selfless.”
