Tragedy Strikes 'The Dark Knight Rises' on Opening Night

Last night's opening of The Dark Knight Rises was sadly marked by tragedy in Colorado.

A mass shooting occured early this morning in Aurora, Colo. A gunman wearing a gas mask opened fire at the opening of Anne Hathaway's new movie, killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others, according to the local news station, KUSA-TV.

Dan Oates, the Aurora police chief, indicated at a news conference, "Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire."

After frantic calls hit the 911 switchboard, police, ambulances, and emergency crews arrived on the scene. A suspect, a 24-year-old man identified by police as James Holmes, was taken into custody. There hasn't been any word on a motive and the FBI indicated there's no connection so far to terrorism.

According to USA Today, President Obama said he was saddened by the "horrific and tragic shooting," and indicated his administration was "committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded."
