James Bond's fabled character has not only entertained and intrigued audiences around the world for fifty years, but has also defined a certain sense of style that can only be described as sexy and indelible so the challenge of dressing Daniel Craig for Skyfall — the 23rd James Bond film weighed heavy on costume designer Jany Temime.

“Every character is so established; we just had to make it slightly different – give it a twist without destroying the 50 years of background,” she says.  “That’s what was very difficult for me.  I have the same job as a designer who is asked to update a famous brand that has been working well for years!”

The challenge, of course, began with Bond himself.  “James Bond is such an iconic figure that you have to respect the style – you have a man, an English gentleman, perfectly dressed, doing a lot of physical stunts. You have to respect that style, but you also have to deliver something new.”

Daniel, who has played Bond three times now, had specific ideas about what he wanted to wear for Skyfall and worked closely with Jany.

“I had a talk with Daniel and he told me what he wanted – he wanted something very physical.  He wanted suits cut very close to his body so that they would move with him.  Although James Bond is an English gentleman – his suits are tailored and well-made – he has an edge. He wears them with a 2012 touch, like the ankle boots he wears," Jany says.

"We fitted different shapes, and when we found the shape we liked, we went to Tom Ford, who manufactured the suits.  They are exceptionally well-made.  The fabric is so amazing – the suits are indestructible.  He’s going through fire, blood, water – and whatever happens, he stands up, and the suit is perfect.”

The style challenge covered not only Bond, but of course the Bond girls as well, Severine (played by Bérénice Marlohe) and Eve (Naomie Harris).

Severine is Bond’s link to Silva, the villain in Skyfall.  Jany says, “When I met Berenice for the first time, I was so amazed by her figure.  I thought, ‘Wow, who’s that?’  She has such a traditional, beautiful, feminine shape.  She reminds me of a film noir femme fatale – and I dressed her like that.  Very vamp – but she can carry it!  It was wonderful to give her dresses that glorify that.”

It was a longer search to find the proper style for Eve.  “It had to be a style that would be proper for the office, proper for the field, and yet still sexy and flirtatious,” says Jany.  “You had to find a limit on how sexy you can go and still wear it in the office – Eve is very flirty, but always stays on the edge.  I dressed her in beige, dark orange, lime green, while Bérénice was in black and dark red.  It made a good contrast.”

Skyfall hits IMAX theaters November 8 and conventional theaters November 9.
