Valkyrie (United Artists) Starring: Tom Cruise, Bill Nighy Not content to stand by as Germany is destroyed under Hitler's reign, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Cruise) takes matters into his own hands by joining the German Resistance. The anti-Hitler - putting himself, his family and the entire Resistance at high risk. Cruise leads an excellent cast including Kenneth Branagh, Nighy and Eddie Izzard. Despite knoeing how the attempt on Hitler's life will end, Valkyrie remains suspenseful.
Marley & Me (20th Century Fox) Starring: Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson It's a good bet you'll need tissues for the screen adapation of John Grogan's heartwarming best seller. Aniston and Wilson star as the couple who adapt Marley, an adoeable Lab who isn't exactly the dog of their dreams! PREVIEW
Yes Man (Warner Bros.) Starring: Jim Carrey, Zooey Deschanel It's a yes! Well, yes and no. Carl (Carrey) tries a desperate remedy to his loser life: saying "yes" to everything that comes his way - notably Allison (Deschanel), whose quirky rocker-chick persona shines through. Not laugh-out-loud funny, but you should manage a few chuckles.
Seven Pounds (Columbia Pictures) Starring: Will Smith, Rosario Dawson Despite great performances and a thought provoking storyline, this drama doesn’t really pull you in. Ben (Smith) works for the IRS and visits people in need of financial, physical or emotional help. Nothing seems to tie together until the very end. Its tough to see what could have been a great movie fall so flat.
Cadillac Records (Sony Music Film) Starring: Beyoncé, Adrien Brody Cadillac Records takes you back to the turbulent times of segregation, telling the story of Chess Records and its legendary artists including Etta James (Beyoncé) and Chuck Berry (Mos Def). Although 90 minutes doesn’t do the tale justice, Beyoncé’s role as a heroin addict blows her Dreamgirls performance out of the studio.
Doubt (Miramax) Starring: Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams Based on the award-winning play, Doubt will leave you breathless. Father Flynn (Hoffman) is accused of a heinous act by Sister Aloysius (Streep), the uptight principal of the school where he works. Sister James (Adams) believes the priest is innocent, but even without a shred of proof, Sister Aloysius stands convinced of his guilt. Streep and Hoffman’s turbulent standoffs are astounding. It’s a fight to the end, but that reinforces the title.
The Reader (The Weinstein Company) Starring: Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes This drama jumps back and forth between the present and an affair that took place roughly 40 years before. Michael (David Kross), a German teen, has a romance with Hanna (Winslet), a mysterious older woman. She abruptly leaves town, and Michael only sees her years later when she is on trial as a Nazi war criminal. Though Michael’s undying love for Hanna provides the lens, the film’s true focus is the Third Reich’s lingering affect on Germany. Superbly cast and crafted, this is not a movie for casual viewing.
Transporter 3 (Lionsgate) Starring: Jason Statham, Natalya Rudakova Frank (Statham) can’t seem to catch a break. He’s forced into transporting a kidnapped girl while attached to an explosive bracelet that will detonate if he moves away from his car. This action-packed film won’t disappoint fans of the series.
Australia (Fox) Starring: Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman Although well done, this epic wartime love story runs a little too long. Sarah (Kidman) falls in love with a cattle driver (Jackman) who she hires to protect her late husband’s ranch. While the Australian backdrop is gorgeous and Kidman and Jackman draw you in, be prepared to sit tight — for almost three hours!
Four Christmases (New Line) Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Vince Vaughn This comedy isn't your typical holiday romance. Couple Brad and Kate plan to ditch their divorced families for a tropical vacation at Christmas. But things go awry, and they are forced to spend the day with four of their parents. Witherspoon proves once again that she's a natural at comedy, while Vaughn keeps the jokes rolling. It's a great date-night movie that will make you cherish your partner.
