Wednesday night in NYC, celebrities from all walks of fame gathered to benefit lung cancer research at the Stand Up For a Cure event at Madison Square Garden.

Samantha Ronson kicked off the night by DJ’ing the pre-party, as stars like her galpal Lindsay Lohan and Gossip Girl‘s Chace Crawford, among others, arrived to support the worthy cause.

Julia Roberts opened up the event and warmed up the crowd for the featured performers, the Dave Matthews Band.

"Hello New York City!" she exclaimed. "I cannot tell you how excited I am to be in the greatest cities in the world to introduce one of the greatest bands of the world," she said of the group.

Julia also thanked those participating in the evening and paid tribute to others who gave themselves selflessly, saying,"We should all feel good about participating. I’m thrilled to be able to say that on September 10 that we are welcoming some of the heroes and first responders from September 11. As New Yorkers, we are beholden to all of them."

The band took the stage and stated with one of their own songs and moving into a few bars of "This Land is My Land."

During the performance, Dave Matthews voiced his wish for the future, saying, "One day, we hopefully won’t need to have events like this."
