Back when people still bought CDs and pop music ruled, July 24, 2001 couldn’t come soon enough. N Sync saw the release of Celebrity that day, its third studio album ? and what appears to be its last. The anticipation for Celebrity wasn’t as great as it was for their previous disc, No Strings Attached, but that didn’t stop it from pushing nearly 1.9 million units in the first week, making it second only to No Strings Attached for debut sales. The album ended up selling five million domestically and 10 million worldwide, giving us some dirty ‘Pop,’ ‘Girlfriend,’ and ‘Gone’ along the way. Then the boys were just that.Coming off two tours in support of the disc in 2002, the boy band announced it was going on hiatus to allow everyone to follow other pursuits, like a solo career, Broadway or space. At the time, all five promised their roads will converge again for another record, irregardless of their individual success (or lack thereof). But the chances of a reunion are slim to nil these days. The quintet briefly reteamed twice in the past five years ? at the 2003 Grammys for a Bee Gees tribute and to sing the national anthem at their charity Challenge for the Children’s basketball game in 2004. It was after that performance they revealed a meeting was planned that weekend to discuss getting back in the studio for their next album. What happened there? Justin Timberlake felt out of sync. However, rumor has it Jive Records signed the group to a five-album deal, and they’ve just delivered two, so maybe it’s not ‘Bye Bye Bye’ for good yet.By Joyce EngPhoto: Wireimage.com
