Today marks the anniversary of "The Day the Music Died." Buddy Holly's death on February 3, 1959 was referred to as the day the music died by Don McLean in his song, "American Pie."

The legendary singer and songwriter died in a plane crash in 1959 after finishing a performance in Iowa when he was only 22 years old, the Baltimore Sun reports.

The Beatles named themselves as a tribute to Buddy's band, the Crickets, and in 1978 Gary Busey earned an Academy Award nomination for The Buddy Holly Story.
