Singer-songwriter Jewel overcame her addiction to caffeine, and she reveals how you can do it, too.

The married musician, 36, whose album Sweet and Wild hits stores Tuesday, didn’t give up on the energy-boosting beverages without suffering consequences.

“I weaned myself off of caffeine,” she tells me. “I have adrenal fatigue, which is basically when you run so hard for so long you burn out your body’s ability to keep up with the high-paced lifestyle. Caffeine is a short-term fix, which can be detrimental to healing your body’s energy needs by taxing your adrenal glands to create more cortisol than it has available. It’s like borrowing money when you are broke.”

She continues, “Quitting caffeine gives my adrenal glands a break and allows me to replace it with something that actually helps fix the problem. Once you get over the initial hump of quitting, you feel a lot calmer and more energetic but in a calm way.”

Substitutions help keep her cravings at bay.

“I drink goat whey in the morning instead of coffee. It’s high in minerals and vitamins and tastes kind of like soup broth. I also like Super Green Kombucha. I know it sounds gross, but I’ve developed a taste for it I guess.”

Jewel’s other healthy habit? Committing to supplements.

“I do take vitamins,” she says. “A good multivitamin, krill oil, and extra B vitamins for my active, high-stress lifestyle.”
