In this Sunday's issue of The New York Times Style Magazine, Katie Holmes lets it all hang out--from the case of nerves she just couldn't shake when she made her Broadway debut this fall, to why she thinks NYC needs to build more underground parking garages.

"In New York, there isn't the underground parking and you can't really sneak in anywhere like you can in L.A.," Holmes, 29, tells the mag. "But try to see New York through Suri's eyes. She goes to music class and for walks in Central Park. We took her to Chelsea Piers for gymnastics and there were so many people that Tom decided to take over an apartment in our building and turn it into a gym for her. He had mats put on the floor and brought in an artist to paint animals on the walls. The teacher can come to Suri's gym now."

Seems like a lot of trouble to go to just to avoid the paparazzi. But since the Cruises moved to NYC for Katie's Broadway debut in All My Sons, the daily photos showing Katie heading to work (often holding daughter Suri, covering her eyes from the camera flashes) makes their efforts a bit more understandable.

Now, Holmes says she's finally doing what she's wanted to do for years. "I was always trying to get to the theater. But then I met Tom and since then we've been all over the world," she says.

But while she may be achieving her dreams, Katie admits she was scared to death during the first week of All My Sons.

"I know everything that's been written and said," she says. "I didn't want people--especially my fellow castmates--to think that I was just cast for name recognition. I wanted the rest of the cast to know that I am serious. There's a misperception about me that I just became this wallflower, this woman who doesn't have any control over her life. That I just became a wife. And that's pretty wrong."

And yet, Katie says she doesn't like to read what's out there about herself or her family.

"I don't go online. I don't read about myself. I can't. I know that if something really horrible happens, someone will tell me about it. I would get too upset and overwhelmed if I read or looked at what's out there. And I have too much to do. I'm a mom and an actress with a play to do every night. I can't pay attention to all that noise."
