Madonna appeared in court today in Malawi and was told she must wait at least one week before a verdict regarding her proposed adoption of 4-year-old Mercy James, CBS reports. After an hour long hearing, her case was adjourned until Friday.

Meanwhile, a charity organization, Save the Children, is working to convince Madonna to leave Mercy in Africa, where they say she belongs.

"We believe very strongly that children are much better looked after, even if they've lost their parents, within their home communities," says Sarah Jacobs, the charity's spokesperson for Africa.
